Gender and Animals in Elif Şafak’s 10 Minutes 38 Seconds in this Strange World Novel

This article examines the representation of 20th-century Turkish patriarchal system in Elif Șafak’s 10 Minutes 38 Seconds this Strange World (2019) novel. It also evaluates how novel describes sufferings and resistance towards oppression through portrayal animals subtly linked to gender issues. The approach used research is qualitative presented descriptive form. data collected phrases referring supporting or resisting authority. study was framed by animal metaphor theory structures proposed Sylvia Walby (1990). result discovered that Șafak uses five expressions represent women's sufferings, powerlessness, lack freedom, such as wild animal, ram lamb, pigeon, duck, rabbits. Contrary, superior position men represented mosquito. On other hand, wolf only expresses society's opposition power. Meanwhile, bird butterfly serve symbols freedom. However, there are six metaphors formulated against subject exploitation, cat, deer, blue betta fish, horse, turtle, spider. All all, almost all characters depicted victims issues covering aspects Walby's theory.
